Temporo Mandibular Disorders (TMD) commonly called TMJ disorders, refers to problems and/or pain in the joints or muscles of the jaw. In many cases, people suffering with TMD/TMJ disorders complain of headaches, pain in their neck, face and ear, difficulty chewing and grinding their teeth.
At Virginia Sleep and TMJ Therapy, your treatment plan may involve a combination of custom designed splints, medications and physical therapy to treat orofacial pain. Our optimal goal is non-surgical treatment, with reduction in pain and return to normal function.
Symptoms of TMD/TMJ
- Pain or tenderness of your jaw
- Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
Ear & Throat Pain
- Aching pain in and around your ear
- Difficulty or pain while chewing

Treatment of Orofacial Pain – Patient Process
Diagnosis. Many patients are not diagnosed correctly and consequently their treatments have limited benefits. Our doctors will provide patients with comprehensive and diagnostic testing options, such as MRI, CT Scan, Joint Vibration Analysis, Doppler and bite analysis, so that an accurate diagnosis can be made.
Treatment. Treatment may involve design of specialized splints, medications and physical therapy.
Insurance. Each individual medical insurance policy is different when it comes to TMJ and facial pain appointments and treatment. We will review your plan and coverage with you prior to service.

Dr. Rebecca Angus blends a lifetime of experience in family dentistry with progressive training in leading-edge procedures and technologies. Frank L. Angus, DDS
Dr. Frank L. Angus studied at Davidson College then earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at the Medical College of Virginia. He practiced general dentistry in the U.S. Army before opening his practice in 1974. Since then he has taken thousands of hours of continuing education, enhancing his skills in cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, endodontics, sedation dentistry, and oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea and snoring. Dr. Angus is an experienced expert in the treatment of temporo-mandibular disorders.
