Snoring Treatment

Helping You Achieve Sound Sleep

If you have been diagnosed with snoring, we at Virginia Sleep & TMJ Therapy are here to help you get the high-quality sleep you deserve using non-invasive, comfortable treatment. Some are simple lifestyle changes, while other options are more intensive therapies. The following treatment options will help eliminate your snoring so that you can get your sleep and life back on track.

Non-Invasive Treatment For Snoring

At Virginia Sleep and TMJ Therapy, we specialize in customized oral appliances. These devices usually resemble a retainer or a mouthguard. It fits over your teeth, keeps your jaw in place and prevents your tongue from blocking your airway. Opening up your airway will allow you to breathe easier at night and will help keep you from snoring. An oral appliance is small and easily removable, making it a great, non-invasive treatment.

Oral appliances are great alternatives to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines. These machines require patients to wear a mask that fits over their nose and mouth while sleeping, which can be uncomfortable.

Lifestyle Changes

In addition to oral appliance therapy, your doctor may recommend some of the following lifestyle changes. While every patient is different, adjusting your habits in addition to wearing your appliance as directed can significantly reduce your symptoms. These lifestyle changes include:

As alcohol can loosen the airways of your throat, eliminate alcohol or do not drink any alcoholic beverages several hours before bedtime.

Over-the-counter allergy medications can dry out your nose and throat, which can contribute to congestion, so take antihistamines in the evening instead of in the morning.

If you are suffering from seasonal or environmental allergies, try sleeping with an air purifier to eliminate allergens.

If you live in a dry climate or your nose and mouth are dry, try sleeping with a humidifier.

If you are overweight, exercising and losing weight will help open up your airways.

Avoid sleeping on your back, and sleep on your side, instead.

Smoking can exacerbate snoring and lead to poorer quality of sleep.

Use a nasal strip at night to help keep your nasal passages clear and open.

Use a saline spray in each nostril before bed to clear the nose of any irritants and allergens .

Maintain a regular sleep schedule and try to get a good night’s sleep as often as you can. Sleep deprivation can make your condition worse, as the muscles of the throat relax even more when you are tired.
